| Sumari: | "Iconoclasm directed at images of the Virgin Mary. The work was occasioned by the Battle of Kallo (near Antwerp) in June of 1638, during which, according to the text, a specific icon of Our Lady of Consolation was targeted by the 'Dutch heretics' and burned. The battle turned into a decisive defeat for the Dutch and proved to be a major turning point in the Eighty Years' War. The Carmelites of Seville, hearing of the desecration of this icon, ordered a replica to be made in silver (so that it might not also be subject to future destruction by fire) and mounted in their own chapel. De la Plata's text opens with a brief history of iconoclastic acts against images of the BVM going back to the reign of Pope Gregory III (d. 741), including the divine punishments meted out by the BVM herself to those who participated in such desecrations. Folios 3-4 give details of the destroyed icon in Kallo; and further chapters discuss the lengthy celebrations held over eight days (an Octava) to commemorate the installation of the silver replica. The final page contains a 'soneto burlesco' imagining the words of the 'Dutch heretic who set the image on fire' "--From bookseller. |
