Seton Ave, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. Scope and Content Manuscripts, Reports and Registers, History, Correspondence, Financial, Publications, Photos, Artifacts Background The first sisters arrived to care for orphans in 1834, after a request from Bishop Rosati. By 1845, boys and younger girls had moved to separate institutions, and St. Philomena's began to focus on its mission as an industrial and technical school for older girls. In 1909, the school moved west from downtown to the corner of Cabanne and Union. The school continued to thrive for several decades, teaching marketable skills such as dress-making. However, the increase in factory-made clothes, and changes in the provision of orphan and foster-care services led to a decline in the mission's viability. Daycare services were added, and parts of the building were used for housing postulants and hosting retreats. St. Philomena's closed in 1960, and the building was sold to the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
