This study investigates how multicultural books impact student identity and their impact on a student’s worldview. The research questions in this literature review are: (1) How do multicultural books affect student identity? (2) What are the hallmarks of high quality culturally authentic literature? This literature review encompasses the definition of multiculturalism, availability of multicultural books, how to select strong texts, and their impact on student identity. One finding of this literature review is that there are many methods for selecting culturally authentic texts. Additional research is needed to find the long-term effects of multicultural books upon student identity. Recommendations following this literature review are that stakeholders in schools work together to effectively integrate multicultural books in the curriculum, as well as completing future research towards finding the long-term effects of multicultural literature.
