Summary:Challenging behaviors are increasingly becoming more common in schools across the county. The purpose of this literature review is to consider the supports and strategies that are most successful in providing a safe and successful education experience to all students. The method included researching articles and studies related to inclusive education, least restrictive environment, social emotional learning and mental health and trauma related school. The findings indicate that the impact mental health and trauma have on students have led to an increase in challenging behaviors in schools. Students with undiagnosed mental health needs and trauma experiences often do not receive the needed supports and services in public schools do to either, lack of qualifying for special education service, limited resources or misdiagnosis of needs. An increase in the focus on mental health services and trauma informed care need to be a priority in schools across the country. Mental health and trauma compromise a child’s ability take in information, establish healthy relationships and develop effective coping strategies all of which impact their ability to grow into successful contributing members of society.
