Sight word acquisition is a critical component of developing reading fluency and poor sight word skills can lead to problems in reading comprehension. Therefore, it is critical for teachers and other educational personnel to understand what methods of instruction are being used to teach sight word skills and to what level of efficacy and efficiency. The purpose of this literature review is to identify instructional strategies currently being used to increase sight word recognition among kindergarten through fifth grade students. Twenty-nine recent studies have been found and reviewed and flashcard drills and reading racetracks are two commonly used and highly effective intervention methods used today. Further investigation is needed in regard to sight word intervention to better compare intervention methods.
