Description
Summary:Includes personal correspondence and a substantial body of original manuscripts, transcripts, and related research materials documenting the early history of the Catholic Church in America. Original documents of the colonial period from Canada, New York, Maryland, Florida, and northern Mexico are present. Of comparable interest are larger bodies of documents from later periods down to about 1875, and an extensive file on Archbishop John Carroll. Also present, a number of original Civil War artists' sketches (deriving, no doubt, from Shea's editorship of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly), and extensive files dealing with native American languages and cultures.
