This title was retained until 1917, when "Prefect of Studies" was removed. In 1920 the title was changed to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, with the same functions of the former office of Vice President in addition to the new function as Dean of Arts and Sciences. In 1952 the former Vice President functions were separated from the duties of the Dean of Arts and Sciences with the creation of the Executive Dean. In 1955, the title of this office changed to Academic Vice President, and from 1958 to 1969 it was called the Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculties. The title of Executive Vice President was instituted in 1969, but the functions of this office were assigned back to the Vice President and Dean of Faculties in 1972, where they remained until 1991 when the titles of Executive Vice President, Senior Vice President and Dean of Faculties, and Vice President of Academic Affairs were created. In 1995 the title of Vice President of Academic Affairs was dropped and in 1998 the title of Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs was instituted while the title of Vice President and Dean of Faculties was dropped. In 2002 the titles of Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Vice President and Dean of Faculties were replaced by the title and office of Provost.
