| 545 | 0 | |a Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 31, 1917, George Drury grew up in Chicago where he attended St. Mel's School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary, and St. Mary of the Lake University, where he received his B.A. in philosophy. In 1948 Drury received his M.A. in Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago, followed in 1958 by a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago. In 1942 Bishop Bernard J. Sheil asked Drury to head an educational program designed to explore social and political problems in the light of modern religious, democratic, and ethical principles. This resulted in the Sheil School of Social Studies opening in 1943, and which Drury was the director of until 1946 when he went to Loyola to pursue an M.A. in Philsosophy, joining the Philosophy faculty as an instructor. From 1959 to 1966 Drury was an Associate Professor of Social Science and Humanities at Monteith College, part of Wayne State University. From 1971 until his retirement in 1987, Drury taught at Empire State College in New York. In addition to his work with the Sheil School of Social Studies, Drury was active in Catholic action particularly through the Catholic Youth Organization and Young Christian Students, where he often wrote and lectured on Catholic action, integration, freedom, student leadership and responsibilities, theology, and philosophy. Among Drury's colleagues in Catholic action were Gordon Zahn, Paule Verdet, Sally Cassidy, and Pat Groom. | |
