Summary:In this interview, Father John Hugo discusses meeting Dorothy Day and the extent to which her absolute pacifism threatened to split the Catholic Worker Movement leading up to and during World War II. He describes the importance of the religious retreats which he led, including one in 1941 that had a profound impact on Day. He outlines some mistakes he made at such retreats, the decline of the retreat era, and some other influential clergy for him and Day. Hugo also discusses where he sees the Catholic Church heading.
