Also two bulls of appointment for Henry Cosgrove as bishop of Davenport, one from the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide and one from Pope Leo XIII; a letter from Cosgrove to Mr. Francis X. Reuss, October 22, 1884; a picture of an unidentified clergyman; and a letter from J.P. Stahl, secretary for Bishop Davis, to James Edwards (ca. 1909) sent along with the bulls of appointment. Background John McMullen, formerly administrator of the diocese of Chicago, was consecrated Davenport's first bishop in 1881. He was succeeded in 1884 by Henry Cosgrove, Rector of St. Margaret's Cathedral, Davenport, the first American-born bishop west of the Mississippi.
