Background David W. Bacon, first bishop of Portland in Maine, was born 15 September 1815, son of William Bacon and Elizabeth Redmond Bacon; he was educated at the Sulpician College in Montreal and at Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
